Air Force Research Laboratory, Albuquerque
Located at Kirtland Air Force Base, the Research Laboratory is the center of
expertise in lasers and directed-energy technology for the U.S. Department of
Defense. Also at Kirtland, the Space Vehicles Directorate develops new space
technology while leveraging capability for the commercial sector.
Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos
Researchers at LANL continue to partner with private industry to make new discoveries. For example, scientists from both LANL and Northrop Grumman recently published in Applied Physics Letters their new design for using sound waves to generate electricity aboard spacecraft.
Sandia National Laboratory, Albuquerque
While LANL focuses on high-risk research and development, Sandia is an engineering lab, involved in commercializing breakthrough technologies. Many aerospace companies have chosen to locate in Albuquerque because of the proximity to Sandia and its expertise. Its small business program provides assistance—at no charge—to businesses with less than 500 employees. Also, aerospace companies benefit from Sandia’s developments in manufacturing, materials science, and engineering. The materials lab there has successfully developed new materials that are stronger, lighter, stealthier, and more heat resistant.
White Sands Missile Range, near Alamogordo
This is the world’s premier missile test range, testing for government agencies, private industries, and foreign countries. It covers 2 million acres, and Holloman Air Force Base is adjacent. Within White Sands, the Naval Air Warfare Center, Weapons Division tests launch operations for sub-orbital space systems and research rockets. WSMR will be the home of the first X PRIZE CUP launch in 2005.

In October 2005, more than 15,000 people attended the first X Prize Cup public spaceflight exhibition in Las Cruces. The event is held annually.
In December 2005 Governor Bill Richardson and Sir Richard Branson announced their intentions to make New Mexico the world headquarters for Virgin Galactic.
Sir Richard Branson and future space travelers celebrate the dawn of the New Space Race at the site of the proposed New Mexico spaceport.
This artist's rendering illustrates the Rocket Racing League who in January 2006 selected Las Cruces as their world headquarters and location for final competitions.
