New Mexico ranks first in the 50 states in the number of PhD scientists and engineers per capita as a percentage of the workforce.

University of New Mexico, Albuquerque

The University of New Mexico’s School of Engineering and its Department of Physics and Astronomy are educating the aerospace workforce of the future. Between the two organizations, the university offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in several areas of engineering and physics. In addition, the University of New Mexico’s Institute of Meteoritics is one of the first institutions in the world devoted to the study of meteorites. It is a premier center for research on the origin and early history of our solar system and the evolution of the planets.

New Mexico State University, Las Cruces

In proximity to White Sands Missile Range, NMSU has a strong reputation as a science and technology institution. NMSU bears the distinction of being a Carnegie 1 Research Institution for the Advancement of Teaching. Also, the Kaplan Newsweek College Catalog ranks it as “Best Value for Your Tuition Dollar.” Thus, NMSU has a great reputation for graduating well-trained professionals. The university offers degrees in chemical, civil, electrical, computer, industrial, and mechanical engineering. It also offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in physics.

New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, Socorro

New Mexico Tech awards undergraduate and graduate degrees in physics as well as a variety of engineering areas. The institution was cited in the 2004 edition of The Princeton Review Guide to the Best 351 Colleges. Fewer than 10 percent of U.S. colleges and universities are profiled in the guide.

Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute, Albuquerque

The Advanced Manufacturing Program at Albuquerque TVI is preparing a workforce for aerospace research as well as aviation-related design and manufacturing.

Eastern New Mexico University, Roswell

ENMU-Roswell's Aviation Maintenance Technology (AMT) program is the only FAA Approved Part 147 AMT program in New Mexico and the only Cessna certified composite training programs in the U.S. Our instructors bring over 100 years of combined experience in the aviation industry to our program. Our high-tech environment includes lecture laboratories, modern facilities and a variety of training aircraft including an MU2D, Cessna 421, 310A and 210E, Beech E50, Starduster and Bell Helicopters.

 

In October 2005, more than 15,000 people attended the first X Prize Cup public spaceflight exhibition in Las Cruces. The event is held annually.

In December 2005 Governor Bill Richardson and Sir Richard Branson announced their intentions to make New Mexico the world headquarters for Virgin Galactic.
