Primo Computer Power for Bioinformatics

Santa Fe is home to an array of firms that make up the “Info Mesa,” which Wired magazine called “the center of the data dump universe.” Perched high on the Info Mesa are Bioreason, Daylight Chemical Information Systems, OpenEye Scientific Software, the National Center for Genome Resources, the Santa Fe Institute, Complexica, and Strategic Analytics. They have the power to further scientific research by analyzing vast amounts of data. Supercomputers at Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories add to the research base.

A Dynamic Research Base

New Mexico’s research base makes it easy for biotechnology firms to take root. World-class research is happening here, particularly at Los Alamos National Laboratories, where Dr. Bette Korber won the E.O. Lawrence Award in September 2004 for her study of the genetic characteristics of the HIV virus.

A Flagship University

The University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque is a premier research institution, ranked in the top 15 primary care-oriented medical schools in the country by U.S. News & World Report. In the past five years, research grants at the UNM Health Sciences Center have increased by 80 percent.

Scientific Alliance

Public and private research institutions have joined together to form the New Mexico Technology Research Corridor Collaborative, which promotes commercialization of publicly funded research and technology.

Members:

  • Air Force Research Laboratory
  • Los Alamos National Laboratory
  • National Center for Genome Resources
  • New Mexico State University
  • New Mexico Tech
  • The MIND Institute
  • Sandia National Laboratories
  • Santa Fe Institute

State-Funded Venture Capital

The New Mexico State Investment Council (SIC) provides financing for start-ups and expansions. It is also an investor in the New Mexico Venture Capital Fund, which has funded 12 New Mexico companies to date, to the tune of $198 million.

More than 30 biotechnology companies make their home in New Mexico, working on biosensors, genomics, and drug delivery.

The University of New Mexico’s Center for High Technology Materials is nationally recognized for its work in optoelectronics.
